A fire broke out at the oil well (number 5) at BAGHJAN Oil Field under Oil India Limited on 09/06/2020, Tuesday afternoon; days after a blowout took place. The gas leak was first reported on May 27, 2020 from a well that was under renovation.
The incident created panic among the local people and forced villagers to flee leaving behind their livestock and belongings. The situation is dangerous and tragic as fire burned several houses and other properties.
The gas leak has caused extensive devastation & Approximately 1,610 families (7000 persons) from the well’s vicinity has been shifted to relief camps as houses, paddy fields Grasslands, crops, livelihood everything have been destroyed by the district authorities. The local flora and fauna was also got hit by the gas leak as it is next to the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park, just 2 km away.
All State Govt officials, military, DGP of police, NDRM, are working to get the situation under
control.
Meanwhile victims/people those were present at the site have started complaining of symptoms
like burning of eyes caused by the gas condensate. It might take upto six months to restore the affected
areas - according to the Oil India Limited spokesperson.
In a series of tweets from the Chief Minister's Office, Sarabananda Sonowal, CM, Assam tweeted :
“The CM has already directed to deploy fire & emergency services, army and police officials at the site to control the situation. The CM also directed district admin to ensure the safety of people and appealed to local people to not panic”
